Prize Draw Terms and Conditions
The Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry ("the Department") is working with Queensland University of Technology ("QUT") to conduct an extension activity relating to the QUT Smart Train Initiative ("Initiative"). This involves an on-line survey developed by QUT, which includes questions about happiness, personality and views on the environment (“the survey”). The data obtained from the survey will be used in a QUT research project on Happiness, based on previous research completed by QUT and internationally.
Two prizes will be awarded:
- A prize for an individual winner of an Apple iPod to the value of approximately $350; and
- A cheque for $1,000 to be spent on science equipment, made out to the individual winner’s school or (if the individual winner is not a school student) a school nominated by the individual. In order to receive the cheque for $1,000, the winning school will be required to provide an invoice requesting payment to the Department. The winning school will also be required to provide receipts/invoices of what the prize money is intended to be or has been spent on.
The prize draw is being conducted by the State of Queensland, through the Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry of 111 George Street, Brisbane, QLD 4000 (ABN 97 406 359 732).
Terms and Conditions
The prize draw is free to enter and is open to school students who have visited the Smart Train, their family members and friends (“entrants”). Entrants must be Australian residents. Employees of, or contractors to, the Department and QUT are not eligible to enter. There is a limit of one entry in the prize draw per individual entrant.
Entry to the prize draw will be deemed successfully submitted when the entrant has:
- Completed the entire survey, available at www.train.qut.edu.au/happy, successfully submitted their answers, and received a unique ”Happy number” onscreen to insert on a “Happiness postcard” (provided to school groups visiting the QUT Smart Train):
- Provided the following information on the Happiness postcard:
- A correctly transcribed Happy number; and
- The entrant’s name, teacher’s name and school name (if applicable.)
- Sent the completed Happiness postcard to the Department at the address below, to be received by 5pm (Queensland time), Friday, 4 July 2008:

CITY EAST QUEENSLAND 4002
- The prize winner is decided entirely by chance, through a random draw of Happiness postcards sent to the Department by entrants.
The closing date of the prize draw is 5.00pm (Queensland time), Friday, 4 July 2008. To be entered into the prize draw, all Happiness postcards must be received at the above address by the nominated time and date.
The prize draw will take place at 11.00am (Queensland time), Monday, 7 July 2008.
- The individual prize of the Apple iPod will be the first prize drawn followed by the school prize of $1,000, as per the information provided on the randomly drawn Happiness postcard.
- The Happy number written on the randomly drawn Happiness postcard will be validated against the list of Happy numbers generated on-line after survey completion. If the Happy number on the Happiness postcard cannot be located in this list, the entry will be deemed invalid, and a redraw will take place. This process will be repeated if necessary until a valid entry is drawn.
- The winner’s details are as provided on the Happiness postcard and will at all times be kept separate from the anonymous survey data.
- The winning school will be contacted by telephone and mail within 5 business days and the individual winner notified by their teacher and/or school representative, using the details provided on the Happiness postcard.
- The individual winner’s name and the winning school will be published on the QUT Smart Train website at www.train.qut.edu/happy as soon as possible (within 7 business days) after the prizes are drawn.
Delivery of prizes
The Department will make every effort to locate the prize winners for the prizes and deliver the prizes to the winners, within one month after winners are decided. This does not apply if:
- the prize winner agrees in writing that the prize may be delivered more than one month after the winners are decided; or
- after making all reasonable efforts, the Department conducting the prize game cannot locate the prize winner.
If the prizes are not claimed, or the winner cannot be located within three months from the day the prize winner is decided, the Department will draw another winner for the prize.
The individual prize of the Apple iPod is inclusive of GST. The Department takes no responsibility for any variations in item values. The Apple iPod is not transferable, exchangeable or redeemable for cash. In the event that the Apple iPod is unavailable, the Department reserves the right to substitute a prize item of equal or greater value. Any taxes (other than GST, if any) which may be payable as a consequence of a winner receiving the prize are the sole responsibility of the winner.

By participating in the survey, entrants agree to be bound by these terms and conditions.
