1. Science
This workshop will provide teachers with hands-on ideas for teaching science using readily available equipment and materials. Teachers will firstly learn more about the emerging technologies – biotechnology and nanotechnology – displayed in the train. They will then explore activities that relate these technologies to the school science curriculum areas of cells and properties of materials. The workshop will also outline the inter-disciplinary Waterwise units produced by the Department of Natural Resources and Water.

Some activities that will be included (and there are more):

  • Making cell membranes
  • See your own DNA
  • Making mucous
  • Grow your own cell population
  • Conceptualising nanoscale
  • The simulated cell: understanding cell structure and function using role play
  • Movement through membranes: diffusion and osmosis in action
  • Seeing the unseen
  • Virus identification through immunoassays
  • Investigating properties of water
  • Good cells gone bad
  • Tensile testing
  • Alginate worms
  • Investigating slime
  • Purifying water

This workshop is mostly aimed at Middle Years teachers however the approach and activities can be modified for other years as well.

2. Engineering
A workshop for teachers and students focusing on Engineering the Future and Women in Engineering. Hear from QUT and local university partners about opportunities in engineering and how to successfully progress a career in Engineering from School –> University –> Graduate Program –> Management.
